U.S. President Joe Biden announced today, February 22, 2022 a set of sanctions against Russia which he and his allies are ready to further escalate should Putin continue with his aggression against Ukraine.
According to President Biden: “This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine… a flagrant violation of international law, and it demands a firm response from the international community.”
Joe Biden said: “We have imposed sanctions on Russia’s Sovereign Debt. This means we have cut off the Russian government’s access to Western funding. Russia can no longer borrow from the West and can no longer secure its debt in Western markets.”
In addition, Joe Biden announced that the U.S. will impose full blocking sanctions on Russian institutions VEB and their military banks.
President Biden stressed that, on February 23, 2022 the United States “will also impose sanctions on Russia’s elites and their family members”.
