The Blue and White leader Benny Gantz was a man of integrity. At least, he had the image of a man of integrity. By joining Netanyahu, Gantz is giving up his integrity.
The argument put forward by the former IDF chief Benny Gantz, the current coronavirus crisis is bigger than politics, is not without substance. According to the Times of Israel, he told Yair Lapid and Moshe Ya’alon that leading Israel into a fourth election was not an option while covid-19 rages. Gantz said that he was “putting Israel first”, and that this was “not the time for rivalries and … factionalism.”
Unfortunately, the greatest hope for Blue and White, Benny Gantz, is now joining forces with a man who should have been forced out of office a long time ago. Gantz was elected speaker of the Knesset and has decided to help Netanyahu form a national unity government. He is ready to work with a prime minister who has been indicted. Something he had categorically excluded before.
Benny Gantz was the man who could unite the opposition in the fight against the current caretaker prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. 61 MKs of the 120-member Knesset recommended Gantz as prime minister. On March 16, he was given 28 days by President Reuven Rivlin to form a coalition government. However, Benny Gantz must have come to the conclusion that he had no realistic chance to form a government in an alliance with the Arab Joint List.
On March 26, Gantz was elected Knesset speaker and decided to join forces with Likud’s Netanyahu in helping him form a unity government in which he will serve as foreign minister. The choice to compromise with Bibi has lead to the collapse of Blue and White, with the party’s other two main leaders, Netanyahu’s former finance minister Yair Lapid and Netanyahu’s former defense minister Moshe Ya’alon, rejecting Gantz’s move.
Whenever you think that Bibi is (politically) dead, he does it again, manages to cling on to power. Will Netanyahu nevertheless end up in jail?
