In the 2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election, the Servant of the People party (Sluha Narodu) of President Volodymyr Zelenski (*1978) has won a clear, absolute majority.

With over 99% of all precincts reporting, the Servant of the People party, named after the president’s former TV show, has won 253 of the 424 seats up for grabs; the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has a total of 450 seats, but because of Putin’s 2014 occupation of the Crimea and his (badly) hidden military intervention in the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, elections for only 424 of the 450 seats could be held. With 253 seats, Zelenski and his Servant of the People party control far more than the 213 seats needed for an absolute majority.

Like Emmanuel Macron in France, Volodymyr Zelenski managed to convince the Ukrainian voters that he was the best option for change and that, in order to change things, he needed a majority in parliament.

Change is needed in Ukraine where oligarchs and gangsters (largely synonyms) control the political, legal and economic system. Many ordinary Ukrainians do not make more than 200 euro per month, whereas the largely corrupt, super-rich elite lives a uperclass, western lifestyle.

In the 2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election, less than half of the voters went to the polls. 49.84% to be precise. Second came the Opposition Platform — For Life of the shady Vadim Rabinovich and Yuriy Boyko, two leaders oriented towards Putin’s Russia. They won 44 seats. The Fatherland party of the former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, nicknamed the “gas princess” for obvious reasons, finished third with 25 seats, ex-equo with former president Petro Poroshenko and his European Solidarity party. Fifth placed is the Voice party of Svyatoslov Vakarchuk, the lead singer of Ukraine’s most successful rock band, Okean Elzy. Voice won 20 seats. This makes Zelensky’s victory even more remarkable, because two “unorthodox” politicians disputed the votes of the anti-establishment electorate.

President Zelensky is a TV comedian. Most parliamentarians of Servant of the People have no experience in politics either. Will they be able to transform the country? The rich and powerful will obviously do anything to prevent change endangering their lifestyle (most of them could and should end up in prison cells).
