Common sense should tell Theresa May to revoke Article 50

Common sense should tell Theresa May to make the best, reasonable choice: revoke Article 50. In December 2018, the European Court of Justice ruled that the United Kingdom can unilaterally revoke Article 50. The UK does not even need the approval of the other 27 EU member states.

Most importantly, Remain is the best option anyway. A hard Brexit would lead to chaos. It would take years to fully establish proper, law-based trade relations with the EU and the world. A soft Brexit would avoid chaos, but only be the second best solution because the UK would still have to accept EU laws, rules and regulations. But the UK would no longer be able to shape present and future EU laws, rules and regulations.

Why can’t the reasonable MPs in all parties come together and acknowledge that Remain is best for Britain? In 2016, only 159 MPs voted Leave, but 479 Remain! If they are so afraid of “betraying” the choice their voters made in the EU membership referendum, based on false claims, they could ask voters again to express their will, based on the more accurate information they have today. It is mind-boggling to see the hard Brexiters claim that a second referendum aka the people’s choice is undemocratic.

It is not 100% sure that, in a second referendum, a majority of UK voters would favor Remain. But if you vote for Leave this time, there can be no excuse.

In case of a Brexit, it is not sure that the UK would remain the EUs main banking center. London is currently the hub for the EUs financial services because it is fully integrated in the EU. That could change very quickly. Why would the EU let the UK keep its full, unrestricted access to the EU’s financial markets and banking system once the country is no longer a member of the EU? Money is very volatile.

A hard Brexit aka no-deal Brexit would lead to a disruption of international supply chains. At least in the first months, imports and exports would become difficult to manage.

Common sense should tell Theresa May to revoke Article 50. If she does not come to her senses in the next days, the reasonable members of the government and among the MPs have to act. Time is running out.
