No-deal aka hard Brexit is not off the table

Despite two House of Commons votes today, a no-deal aka hard Brexit is not off the table.

The House of Commons first passed a no no-deal ever amendment with 312 votes to 308. The motion tabled by Caroline Spelman and Jack Dromey and backed by people including Hilary Benn, Yvette Cooper as well as all 11 members of the Independent Group — 11 MPs who resgined from the Labour and Conservative Parties in February — is not binding.

Then the House of Commons went on to vote in the main amendment on Brexit. Once again, a majority of MPs voted against the government and rejected the possibility of a no-deal Brexit: 321 votes to 278.

Unfortunately, a no-deal aka hard Brexit is still not off the table. For once, the prime minister was right. After the votes on the two amendments mentioned above, Theresa May pointed out to the fact that a no-deal Brexit could only be avoided by agreeing a deal, or cancelling Brexit (that is to simply Remain a member of the EU).

In short, despite all the voting, all the amendments passed, all options remain on the table: a no-deal aka hard Brexit, Remain as well as Theresa May’s Deal — although rejected more than once.
